Northwest College Hosting Student Academic Showcase on April 28

April 18, 2023

Northwest College is hosting its inaugural Student Academic Showcase on Friday, April 28, in the Yellowstone Building Conference Center. The event is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The Student Academic Showcase highlights student work involving creativity, discovery, research, innovation, and/or entrepreneurship, giving them an opportunity to take part in a professional exhibit of scholarship across the disciplines. It builds on classroom experiences in a venue where they can share their work with faculty, student peers, and community members, while developing their presentation and performance skills.

A total of 39 presentations are on the schedule with approximately 70 students participating. Students are given three options for sharing their work: exhibit/demonstration, poster, or presentation (often with a slideshow). Nearly every academic area at Northwest College will be featured in the showcase.

The complete list of topics and presenters can be found at www.nwc.edu/showcase, along with exact times for individual or group presentations.

The showcase concept can be traced back to 2019 and Associate Professor of History Amy McKinney’s Women in the West course. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of women’s suffrage, students in the class conducted presentations that were attended and well-received by members of the campus and community. Those students were able to present their work, discuss what they had learned throughout the semester, and also engage with attendees.

“This showcase attaches itself to the college mission, providing students an opportunity to participate and talk about the work they’ve done beyond the classroom,” said McKinney, who has organized this year’s event. “It’s really a celebration of our students, and we’re hopeful we can build more relationships with the community through this.”
