Course Delivery Methods
Our courses are delivered in a variety of different formats, but two important terms to learn are synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous means the class meeting times are delivered on a set day and time each week, whether face-to-face or online. Asynchronous means there are no required meetings times, you participate online but still at a defined pace (usually coursework for the week must be completed that week). Note the difference between the two when reading the descriptions below.
Face to Face:
Delivered in a traditional face-to-face classroom on campus or at an outreach center. Class materials may be available online (which will require an internet connection and a login), but classes will be conducted in-person. (SYNCHRONOUS)
Online - Synchronous:
Delivered completely online with required meeting times from the instructor. Participation will require an internet connection, a camera and a microphone. Access to course materials will require login. (SYNCHRONOUS)
Online - Asynchronous:
Delivered completely online without face-to-face meeting requirements OR required meeting times from the instructor. Participation will require an internet connection, a camera and a microphone. Access to course materials will require login. (ASYNCHRONOUS)
Hybrid:
Delivered through a combination of face-to-face interaction and online. Students will have to meet at a specific location (in-person or online) and time according to a set schedule. Online participation will require an internet connection, a camera and a microphone. Access to course materials will require login. (SYNCHRONOUS & ASYNCHRONOUS)
Flexible Attendance:
Delivered face-to-face with option to attend required meeting times online instead. Students can choose which modality they prefer for any scheduled meeting. Online participation will require an internet connection, a camera and a microphone. Access to course materials will require login. (SYNCHRONOUS)
Hyflex:
Delivered three ways at the same time: 1) face-to-face, 2) online with required meeting times, OR 3) online without face-to-face meeting requirements or required meeting times. Students can choose week to week which modality they prefer that week, at will. Online Participation will require an internet connection, a camera and a microphone. Access to course materials will require login. (SYNCHRONOUS & ASYNCHRONOUS)
