Suffer First Losses To No. 1, No. 3 Teams
The 11th-ranked Northwest College Trapper wrestling team got a taste of Northwest region competition last weekend, winning one of three duals in Couer d’Alene, Idaho. The duals wrap up the Trappers’ 2012 portion of the wrestling season.
The Trappers suffered their first dual defeat of the season on Friday, falling by a 35-6 final count to top-ranked North Idaho. On Saturday, the Trappers opened with a 29-16 loss to No. 3 Clackamas before edging Southwestern Oregon by a 24-21 final score.
“We knew North Idaho was going to be tough, and they were,” said Trapper wrestling coach Jim Zeigler. “They were healthy coming in to the match and just about every guy they have is ranked nationally.”
Despite that firepower, the Trappers managed a couple wins in the competition. Zach Loveless was a 2-1 winner in his match at 141 pounds against the No. 4 wrester in his weight class nationally. Diorian Coleman added a 3-1 victory over the nation’s No. 5 wrestler at 165 pounds for the Trappers .
“Zach wrestled well the entire weekend,” said Zeigler. “He had a really good trip.”
Even some of the Trappers’ losses might bode well for the future. In particular, Zeigler pointed toward the 125 match, which Cody Vichi lost by a 7-5 count to the top-ranked grappler in the weight class.
“That’s a third-year kid, and our freshman was right there with him and wrestled a pretty good match,” said Zeigler. “That’s a result we’ll be looking to reverse by the end of the year.”
Other outcomes the Trapper coach might be looking to flip might include Colton Thornton’s 6-3 loss at 157 pounds and Cole McArthur’s narrow 4-3 loss to the top-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds.
Thornton would sit out Saturday’s duals against Clackamas and Southwestern Oregon with what Zeigler described as a sternum injury.
Against Clackamas, the Trappers received a major decision win from Coleman at 165. Vichi (125) and Loveless (141) were both second-period fall victors. Against Southwestern Oregon, Gibson was a forfeit winner at 197 and Loveless added a win by fall at 141. McArthur (174), Vichi (125), Guild (133) and McCormick (148) each won decisions.
The Trappers won five of the last six matches against Southwestern Oregon to rally from 12 points back for the victory.
The Trappers are off until Jan. 5, when the team travels to the Utah Valley University tournament. Following that tournament, the team will leave from Utah to Kansas for a series of five duals before returning home.
