Northwest College’s wrestling team lost to MSU-Northern (Havre, Montana) by a bonus point award after being tied at 21 at the conclusion of all the matches.
Wrestling duals can no longer result in a tie, so a tie-breaking system has been put into place to give a single point to whichever team meets the criterion.
The tie-breaker system was then put into effect, and it went down to the fourth criterion to give MSU-Northern the bonus point and the win 22-21.
The fourth criterion is the team with the greatest number of match points.
The dual, which occurred at the high school in Laurel, Montana on Nov. 16, started with a exhibition match between Clayton Carter of MSU-Northern and Colton Parham. Parham lost by a 7-3 decision.
To start the point earning matches was the 125 pound weight class between Matthew Barfuss and Robert Pair.
Pair beat Barfuss by a 6-4 decision, giving MSU-Northern its first three points.
Next up was the 133-pound weight class where Dylan Lockwood would get another six points for MSU-Northern by a forfeiture.
Riley Loveless at 141 pounds would get Northwest’s first three points with a 2-0 decision over Dylan Veis.
Going into the 149-pound weight class, the score was 9-3 MSU-Northern.
Drake Randall would add three points, making the score 12-3 MSU-Northern with a 6-5 decision over Garrett Wood.
A forfeiture by MSU-Northern at 157 pounds yielded six points for NWC and wrestler Cameron Braden to close the score to 12-9 MSU-Northern.
Andrew VonRein at 165 pounds would give NWC a three-point lead with a win by fall 3:47 against Drew Randal.
Northwest’s Reece Prosser would add another three points with a 5-1 decision over Steeler French.
With the score 18-12 for NWC going into the 184-pound weight class match, Ben Stroh of MSU-Northern would close the gap by three with an 8-3 decision over Heber Shepherd.
But Trapper Jeffrey Oakes would cancel out those points with a 12-6 decision over Dace Fisher.
Going into the final match of the night, the heavyweights, NWC was up by six points with the score at 21-15.
MSU-Northern’s Taylor Kornoely would pin Colt Horn at 6:13 to tie the team scores for the dual at 21, creating the need for the tiebreaker criterion.
