Redshirt sophomore Luis Carranza was named the 2010 recipient of the Apodaca Award for Leadership and Excellence presented by Northwest College. Carranza wrestled the two previous seasons for the Trappers before returning this season as a redshirt member of the team.
"In all the years we've given this award, nobody has embodied the spirit and principle of what the award stands for as much as Luis," said Northwest College wrestling coach Jim Zeigler. "He deserves this award as much, if not more than, any other kid who has ever received it."
Carranza wrestled the past two seasons for the Trappers. He returned to the school this year to work toward the goal of earning a spot with a four-year program.
"He's a kid that didn't get to the top of the podium, so he didn't get the recognition he deserved," Zeigler said. "By coming back, he's fine-tuning himself for another year. He's focusing on his grades and doing the things he needs to do to become more attractive to a four-year program. He's put himself in a good bargaining position by doing those things and I can't imagine any coach not wanting him on their team because he's a utility sort of guy who has come so far and developed so much."
