Coach Pleased Despite 2-0 Loss In Billings
Northwest College Trappers fell 2-0 to Rocky Mountain College in exhibition soccer action on Saturday. Despite the outcome, head coach Kaylin Olivas was pleased with her team’s performance.
“This first week of practice, we’ve really focused on our defense and midfield play, and for the most part we were successful with that in the scrimmage,” said Olivas.
Rocky’s first goal was the result of an own-goal by the Trappers. The second goal came off a free kick opportunity.
“Our central back defenders were playing just a shade too wide and didn’t converge in time,” Olivas said. “Both goals were the result of little things that we can correct in practice. Rocky is a good team and a four-year school, so it was good to see that we didn’t lose the game through the regular run of play and we didn’t give up anything one-on-one.”
Offensively, things were a little different story as the Trappers struggled to finish their opportunities. Northwest misfired on a trio of breakaway attempts and failed to record a goal.
“Our focus is on preparing for the season and doing the things we need there,” said Olivas. “We struggled a bit to finish, but that will come around. Our focus was on the defensive side coming in and honestly I thought this was a good turnout for us.”
The Trapper men also held their first scrimmage of the season on Saturday in Billings. The result from that contest was not available as of press time.
Both Trapper soccer teams returned to action Monday night in Cody. Northwest College hosted another round of exhibition scrimmages against Rocky Mountain College. The Trappers begin their regular season on Aug. 25 with games at Great Bend, Kan., against Barton Community College.
