Top-10 Foe too Much for Northwest
The Northwest College Trappers lost their first Region IX game of the women’s soccer season last weekend, falling 4-1 in Cheyenne to Laramie County Community College. LCCC entered that contest ranked No. 7 nationally.
“To be honest, the score really does not replicate the game that was played,” said Trapper women’s coach Kaylin Olivas.
LCCC scored the only goal of the first half in the 35th minute. The Golden Eagles added a quick strike to begin second-half play before the Trappers got onto the scoreboard.
Northwest’s goal came in the 60th minute. Christine Silverstrone crossed the ball to former high school teammate Lauren Madden, who one-touched the ball into goal.
LCCC added a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the half as the Trappers threw players forward in an effort to score an equalizing goal and send the contest into overtime.
“We had some good opportunities where we didn’t find the net,” Olivas said of her team’s effort. “We had a breakaway where we missed the goal. We had a point-blank shot in front of the net that we fired into the keeper. We had our opportunities. We just didn’t capitalize on them like they did. That’s what happens against a good team that can finish.”
Mistakes in the back of the Trappers’ defense also put the team in trouble at times.
“Their four goals came off mistakes that we made giving up the ball,” said Olivas. “We were stepping too early or not making passes we needed to. They’re things we can correct. Simple mistakes — that’s what really hurt us.”
The Trappers did pick up one Region IX win last week, however. Northwest College battled for a 1-0 win against Western Nebraska on its home turf. Samiha Simao’s diving header in the box scored the only goal of the game for Northwest.
The split of games over the past week moved Northwest College to a 7-3 overall record. The team is 3-1 in Region IX games. The Trappers were in action on Wednesday night, hosting Western Wyoming. That afternoon game had not finished by the time today’s paper went to press.
The Trappers’ next game will be Oct. 4, when the team travels to Bismarck State College. The team will also play an Oct. 5 game in North Dakota
