Conference Opener At Home Wednesday
A dominating third quarter put things away for the Northwest College women’s basketball team in a 70-45 triumph over Williston State College Sunday afternoon at Cabre Gym.
The Lady Trappers outscored Williston 24-6 in the third period to clinch their second win of the year over the Tetons; NWC opened its basketball season with a 61-49 win at Williston, North Dakota.
Samiyah Worrell scored five points and Raquel Turner four points to quickly extend Sunday’s eight-point halftime lead, 36-28, into a 17-point bulge for Northwest before the visitors could score in the second half. NWC led 13-12 after one quarter.
Coach Camden Levett emptied his bench, and all 11 Trapper players recorded at least 13 minutes of action.
“Everyone contributed. We played 11 and 10 scored,” Levett said. “It was a good way to return. You never know what you’re going to get coming out of the break.”
With the win, Northwest women improved their record to 9-7 heading into conference play — and Levett pronounced his team ready. Laramie County Community College is the opponent for Wednesday’s conference opener, set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. in the Cabre Gym.
Three Lady Trappers scored in double figures in Sunday’s game against Williston State. Worrell led the way with 15 points, including hitting four out of five tries from 3-point range. Adela Smutna and Melissa Martinez each tallied 10 points. Turner had eight points while Powell High School alumna Aubrie Stenerson chipped in seven points.
Williston’s Gabriella Capasso scored 16 points to take game honors, while Jordan Kulczyk had 11 for the Tetons.
For the contest, NWC shot 26 of 63 from the field for 41 percent. The Trappers were 8 of 20 from behind the 3-point arc for 40 percent. From the free throw line, NWC was 10 of 19 for 53 percent.
“We shot the ball well,” Levett enthused. “There were a lot of positives.”
One that he singled out was the way his team took care of the basketball: The Lady Trappers had only 16 turnovers in the game.
