Northwest College hosted its Trapper Athletic Awards Ceremony on May 2, honoring the various programs at Northwest after a successful year.
Throughout the night each team, including the basketball teams, soccer teams, volleyball, wrestling, esports and rodeo teams were honored and provided recaps regarding their respective seasons.
The big awards of the night went to Aziz Fayzullaev and Darla Hernandez, who were named the male and female athletes of the year for Northwest.
Fayzullaev earned the award after an undefeated season and national championship at 174 pounds for the Trapper wrestling team — the first national champion for Northwest since 2018.
“It’s been awesome,” Fayzullaev said. “The way I did this with my coach and my team, it was good.”
Hernandez was named the female athlete of the year after her strong season for the Trapper women’s basketball team, finishing the year averaging 16.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds for an improved Trapper team.
She was also named an honorable mention All-American for her efforts this season.
“It’s definitely an honor to have gotten that award out of everybody here at the school,” Hernandez said. “To find out I was an All-American was pretty crazy, it was something I had heard of but to be an honorable mention was super cool.”
The other top awards for the night were the Trapper Award, which went to Juan Pablo Camargo on the men’s basketball team, and Elsa Clark of the volleyball team.
The Trapper Scholarship winners were Anna Knight from the women’s basketball team and Brash Emery from the men’s basketball team.
