The Trapper women dropped their last two games at home to Sheridan and Gillette.
Northwest (11-15 overall, 2-6 in Region IX) fell to Sheridan on Feb. 5 by a count of 72-58 and lost to the Pronghorns of Gillette 64-47 on Saturday.
In the tilt opposite the Sheridan Generals (15-10, 5-4), Trapper Samiyah Worrell went coast to coast on the dribble and scored the layup that had Northwest up 2-0. Sheridan answered on the next possession and the game was on.
Worrell fired in a three from the deep corner in the final minute of the first period and posted her team to a lead of 18-12 after one. But that was as good as things would get for NWC, which would eventually trail Sheridan by as much as 23 points.
“As a team we’re very disappointed and frustrated with the way our last couple of games” have played out, said coach Cam Levett. “We were excited to be back in Cabre Gym to play in front of a great home crowd for Trapper Dave night [on Feb. 5], but came up short.”
Levett said the Trappers have to shoot better.
“Shooting 32 percent from the field, 14 percent from three, and 57 percent from the free throw line won’t win you a lot of games at the collegiate level,” he said. “Region IX North has some great coaches, teams and players and I have to do a better job having our team ready to play for 40 minutes.”
“Our third quarter was dismal against Sheridan,” Levett lamented of the Trappers’ 21-8 deficit. “To their credit they made threes and did a good job contesting ours. We see them again in a couple of weeks in Sheridan.”
Levett said NWC’s 16 offensive boards “is the only stat I’m proud of” on the Sheridan game stats sheet.
Worrell led Trapper scoring with 17 points, Lily Henry pitched in 10, Adela Smutna nine and Riley Aiono eight. Aiono pulled down eight rebounds from her post in the paint. Turner notched four assists and Worrell three.
Sara Oco led all scorers with 23 for the Generals.
Saturday night facing Gillette (23-3, 8-2), Levett’s women were out-scored in every quarter, however a nine-point deficit in the second took the biggest bite.
The Trappers went up three at the 8:32 mark of the first quarter, but the Pronghorns later took the lead for good.
Smutna and Worrell were the top scorers for Northwest with 16 and 14 points, respectively. No other Trapper contributed more than Raquel Turner’s five.
Kobe Hawea led game-scoring with 20 for the Pronghorns.
Smutna and Turner had the best of it on the glass with six rebounds apiece, but Hawea and Molly Coleman each had 10 for the Pronghorns. Coleman’s 11 points made it a double-double outing for her.
In the team accounting Gillette was credited with 47 rebounds to 29 for Northwest. Offensive rebound numbers were 15 for the visitors to just five for NWC.
The Trappers hosted Central Wyoming Wednesday night and are on the road at Casper College Saturday.
