When the Northwest College volleyball team shows up in pink at its Friday and Saturday matches Oct. 19 and 20, don’t worry that the Trapper’s crimson and gray uniforms are fading. The new color means Coach Shaun Pohlman and his players will be fighting a dual battle — against their opponents and against breast cancer.
The action starts at 7 p.m. Friday with the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles and 3 p.m. Saturday with the Lancers from Eastern Wyoming College.
The Trappers are sponsoring the Dig Pink event to support the Side-Out Foundation’s goal of raising $2.5 million. Side-Out uses the proceeds to fund grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing compassionate support to breast cancer patients and their families. The team will also be making efforts to donate funds to area wellness centers that specialize in breast cancer.
The Trappers encourage their fans to join them in wearing pink to both games in Cabre Gym.
To make it easy, Trapper supporters will be selling pink T-shirts during the event. They’ll also collect donations, hold a silent auction and sell tickets for raffle baskets.
The team’s goal is to raise $1,000 during the two games. The Trappers join other college and high school volleyball coaches and teams across America who are hosting Dig Pink events to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation.
“We hope to see more than Trapper fans at this game,” Pohlman said. “If your life has been touched in any way by breast cancer, I hope you’ll come to support the larger cause we’re playing for. There’ll be a lot more happening than volleyball, so even if you don’t follow the game, you can still be a part of this event.”
Admission to Trapper volleyball games is $3 for adults, $2 for students, and free for senior citizens, children under age 12 accompanied by an adult, and NWC students with valid ID.
