Fall athletics at Northwest College has wrapped up as the women’s volleyball team finished its season at the Region IX tournament in Cheyenne on Nov. 2.
The Lady Trappers entered the tournament with a commanding three set (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) win over Otero Junior College to start but then fell to Western Nebraska after taking the first two sets. The Cougar comeback sent the Trappers into the losers bracket to play Western Wyoming.
After battling to wins in the first two of three sets (14-25, 25-20, 29-27) NWC needed just one more set victory to advance. But the Mustangs swept the final two sets to send the Lady Trappers home.
Northwest finished the season with a 17-12 (8-7 Region IX) overall record. Shania Warren led the team in multiple categories with 2.51 kills per set and 1.03 blocks per set. She also topped the Region IX north division with a .313 hitting percentage, a stat good enough for 41st in the country. It was the final season for the former All-State high school player.
The Northwest men’s soccer team completed its season Oct. 26 with a 4-2 loss to Sheridan College in the Region IX tournament semifinals. The loss came on the heels of the Trappers’ first postseason win since 2012 with a 3-2 upset of Northeast Junior College in the first round.
Marcus Olmos was stellar in goal for Northwest, only allowing 18 goals the entire season, second best in the Region IX north division. The Fresno, Calif., native also boasted a 1.79 goals against average and .743 save percentage.
Spanish-born midfielder Sergio Garcia Santamarina led the team with five goals and 29 shots on goal.
Northwest finished with a 5-5-2 (3-3-2) overall record.
