About a month of fall sports is now complete at Northwest College, with soccer and volleyball teams notching strong early wins.
Northwest volleyball is currently riding a four-game win streak with back-to-back four-set victories against Central Wyoming College and Western Wyoming College in its homestand last weekend. The Trappers currently sit atop the Region IX north division standings with an 8-6 (3-0 north division) overall record.
Northwest outside hitter Shania Warren leads the conference with a .319 hitting percentage and is fourth overall in kills per set, averaging 2.34.
Northwest will next play at Sheridan College Friday. The Trappers beat the Generals 22-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-10 when they last played Sept. 1. The volleyball women will likely face their biggest conference test Oct. 5 at home against fellow league-leader Laramie Community College.
The men’s soccer team is off to a 2-3-1 start, beating Colorado Northwestern 7-0 and conference foe Western Wyoming 4-3. The Trappers also lost to Gillette twice, Laramie County Community College and tied Sheridan College in its home opener Sept. 8.
Midfielder Sergio Garcia Santamarina leads Northwest with four goals on the season – three coming in the blowout win against Colorado Northwestern. Alejandro Fernandes has assisted on four goals, tied for second overall in Region IX north division play.
The Trapper men will look to add a third win Friday at Sheridan College in its next match. They will have their home finale Oct. 10 against Western Wyoming before the start of the Region IX tournament.
The women’s soccer team is still seeking its first win of the season but did earn a 1-1 double overtime tie with Gillette College Saturday. Former Cody Filly Jules Novakovich tapped home the equalizer in the 76th minute on a flick pass from her high school teammate Genevieve Sauers, during a free kick exchange. Goalie Christina Lacek has the 3rd highest save percentage (.717) in the Region IX north division.
The Lady Trappers (0-7-1) will return to action Friday at Sheridan College and will return home Oct. 10 against Western Wyoming.
