NWC Finishes Year at 15-17
The Northwest College Trappers were eliminated from Region IX North volleyball play on day three of the regional tournament. The Trappers opened with a loss in five to Laramie County, recovered to post a 3-0 win against Dawson and then were eliminated by Central Wyoming in a 3-0 sweep.
“Across the board, I think you could see that a lot of teams showed up to play,” said Trapper head coach Shaun Pohlman. “They brought their A games, and I’m not sure that’s necessarily the case with us.”
The first-year coach of the Trappers noted that his team competed hard. He just felt there were certain areas of the game where the team could have performed better.
“It certainly wasn’t a lack of effort on our part,” Pohlman said. “We just didn’t have it.”
Northwest’s tournament stay began with a 25-23, 21-25, 18- 25, 25-17, 15-13 loss to Laramie County that put the team into the elimination bracket. The game was a tough one to swallow for Pohlman, who noted the Trappers led 16-12 in the fourth game before things went south.
“We relaxed a little bit and suddenly we’re losing in game four and playing a game five,” Pohlman said.
Ultimately, the Trappers grabbed an early three-point lead in that decisive fifth game before falling to LCCC late.
Northwest recovered to sweep Dawson from the event with a 25- 10, 25-17, 25-14 victory. The team lost the following day to Central Wyoming by a 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 count.
“Again, we were ahead in games 1 and 3 and couldn’t close out either one,” Pohlman said. “When we played Central at home the other week, we did an excellent job of keeping them out of their system. This time, we weren’t able to.”
Western Wyoming eventually captured the Region IX North title and will represent the area at the NJCAA national tournament.
