Team Improves Region IX Standing with Big Wins
The he Northwest College volleyball team kicked off a six-game homestand with a pair of critical Region IX victories on Friday and Saturday. The Trappers defeated Sheridan and Dawson to improve to 5-6 in Region IX North play this season.
Friday’s match against Sheridan was a nailbiter. After watching the Generals eke out two of the first three sets, the Trappers rallied late for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-18, 15-13 victory.
Flavia Oliveira finished with 23 kills while Becky Downs added 16 kills and a .341 attacking percentage in the victory. Leah Schaal added 52 of the team’s 57 assists and was one of five Trapper players to finish in double figures for digs with 17.
Danielle Schaal paced the Trappers’ back-row play with 31 digs. Oliveira added 25 digs, while Katie Burnett (18) and Brecka Carrizales (10) also reached double figures in the category.
On Saturday, Northwest College played a triangular with Dawson and the Rocky Mountain College JV squad. The Trappers scored a 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23 win in the early game against Dawson, but fell short against the Rocky Mountain JV side, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, 19-25, 10-15.
Becky Downs paced a trio of Trappers in double figures for kills with 13 against Dawson. Olivia Rogers and Lauren Buseman each added 10 kills.
Flavia Oliveira had four of Northwest’s 14 ace serves in the match. Danielle Schaal added 34 digs as one of four Trapper players to reach double digits there. Leah Schaal added 45 assists in the victory.
In the nightcap, Oliveira roared to life with 16 kills at the net. Downs added nine kills and Cailey Washington produced seven kills. Leah Schaal added 37 assists and three of the team’s six ace serves. Danielle Schaal came up with 40 digs in the back row.
Brecka Carrizales, Leah Schaal, Oliveira and Katie Burnett also topped double digits in digs as, once again, five Trappers excelled in the stat.
With their 2-1 performance over the weekend, the Trappers moved to 12-14 overall this season. The team will continue its home play with a Thursday contest against Casper College and a Friday game against No. 2 Western Wyoming. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
