Victory Over Ranked Barton Highlights Weekend
The Northwest College Trappers won three of their four games last weekend at the Wyobraska tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb. The Trappers swept Williston, won in four games against Lamar and scored a 3-2 decision over No. 15 Barton.
The Trappers’ only defeat came to open the tournament, a 3-1 loss to No. 12 Northeastern.
The results moved the Trappers’ record to 9-9 overall this season. Seven of those nine losses have come at the hands of nationally ranked teams while an eighth was against a school that, at the time, was also receiving votes in the national poll.
“Honestly, I couldn’t be happier with everything,” said Trapper head coach Shaun Pohlman. “Going into the weekend, we kind of targeted Barton. We scouted them hard on film and at the event and we had a specifc gameplan against them. We felt if we prepped for them, everything else this weekend would take care of itself.”
That game plan produced a 25-14, 20-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-8 victory against its intended victim. Cailey Washington finished with 14 kills against Barton. Flavia Oliveira added 12 kills and 25 digs for a double-double. Marina Leal had eight kills and also played a role in 10 blocks, including a pair of solo stuffs.
Northwest also picked up a 22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-20 win over Lamar. Washington once again paced the Trappers with 12 kills. Powell freshman Olivia Rogers added a 10-kill performance.
In perhaps the most impressive stat from the Lamar game, the Trappers produced 20 ace serves in their win over Lamar. Five of those came from Oliveira while Brecka Carrizales turned in four more.
Northwest’s win over Williston came by a 25-16, 25-18, 25-14 sweep. Carly Meyer had nine kills to lead a balanced attack which saw the Trappers compile a .244 attack percentage in the game.
Washington added six kills as eight different NWC players recorded kills in the game. Carrizales and Alyssa Montoya each had three ace serves. Leal added four blocks at the net.
Northwest’s only loss came against Northeastern. After taking the first set 25-17, Powell couldn’t find the same gear, falling in the next three 25-19, 25-20 and 29-27.
Washington’s seven kills were tops. Leal, Oliveira and Becky Downs each added six as balance was again the key word for the Trappers. Katie Burnett produced four ace serves while Leal played a role in 10 of the 23 blocks recorded by the Trappers in the contest.
“We got out to a great start against Northeastern,” said Pohlman. “We were up, I think, 8-0 at one point, and then we strayed a little. We were right there with them. We battled all weekend.”
Leah Schaal finished with 121 assists for the weekend between the four games. She registered a pair of double-doubles in assists and digs.
“Cailey Washington had a stellar weekend,” Pohlman said of his hitter, who finished with 39 kills between the four contests. “I also thought our serving and our block effort were really good. It was a great effort overall.”
The first-year Trapper head coach also noted that effort is starting to pay dividends in his team’s overall stats.
“If you look at stats this reporting period compared to the previous one, the kids showed some huge jumps in numbers. That’s a very encouraging aspect to see. We’re seeing results.”
The Trappers travel to Casper College tonight (Thursday) and No. 4 Western Wyoming on Saturday.
