The Northwest College Trappers split a pair of Region IX North volleyball matches over the weekend. The Trappers won 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 over Eastern Wyoming on Friday before falling to No. 7 Laramie County Community College 26-24, 25-16, 25-21 on Saturday afternoon.
The weekend split of games leaves the Trappers 12-16 overall this season and 5-3 in third place in the Region IX North standings.
“It’s tough,” said Trapper coach Flavia Siqueira, who has seen a promising season derailed by injuries. “I look down the bench for someone to put in, and there’s just not anyone there. The girls are trying, but we’re limited in what we can do and how we can defend certain situations right now.”
Despite the Trappers’ health issues, the team was able to make quick work of Eastern Wyoming on Friday night. Sandrina Hunsel led the way with 16 kills. Sophomore Danielle York added nine kills and a team-high three blocks.
Clark sophomore Jessica Denney also had three blocks. Freshman Phoibe Fetu sent three ace serves sailing across the net in the victory.
On Saturday, the Trappers donned special pink uniforms as part of a Dig Pink fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and research. Not even the added crowd support was enough to help the Trappers overcome seventh-ranked LCCC.
“They took advantage of our situation in the middle,” said Siqueira. “They’re a good volleyball team and with our injuries it’s like playing them six-on-three sometimes. I don’t want to sound like we’re making excuses, but it’s frustrating.”
Hunsel again led the way for Northwest College with 10 kills and five blocks. Gabriella Fabri also finished with five blocks in the game. York added six kills in support.
The Trappers wrap up their longest homestand of the season at 7 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) against Central Wyoming. The Trappers hit the road over the weekend with games at Sheridan and Dawson.
