NWC Gets Close but not Quite, in Three Losses

The Northwest College Trapper volleyball squad defeated Navarro College 21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 over the weekend at the College of Southern Idaho Top 10 tournament. The team wasn’t as fortunate in losing in straight games to both the host school and North Idaho College, both nationally ranked.
The Trappers also fell in four games to Snow College.
“We played very well,” Trapper coach Flavia Siqueira said of the tournament, which saw Northwest College go 0-6 in games decided by two or three points. “We are hurting at the middle position by not having Mayara (Conilho).”
The Trappers’ 5’10” middle hitter suffered a knee injury two weeks ago, marking the team’s second significant injury to a middle hitter in the season’s first month.
In their losses, the Trappers fell 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 against third-ranked Southern Idaho. The team also lost 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 25-22 to unranked Snow College and 27-25, 25-22, 37- 35 to No. 19 North Idaho in a contest that conjured memories of last year’s regional tournament.
“For sure, I had flashbacks,” Siqueira said, referencing her team’s 43-41 record-setting game vs. Western Wyoming. “We ran out of subs at about 20 points and kept going on different positions and adjusting to each play because we could not sub the proper players in any more.”
The weekend results leave Northwest with a 5-12 overall record this season. Nine of those losses have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
Northwest College resumes action tonight (Tuesday) as the team hosts Dawson Community College in a 7 p.m. contest in Cabre Gymnasium. The match will serve as a tuneup to the weekend’s Wyo-Braska Tournament appearance in Scottsbluff, Neb.
