The Northwest College Trappers captured five wins in six games over the weekend at the Wyo-braska tournament in Scottsbluff, Neb. Included in that mark was a five-game win over 12th-ranked Northeastern Junior College.
"I was pleased with the way our athletes performed this weekend," said Trapper head coach Flavia Siqueira. "The match against NJC was very intense and it took a lot of focus and determination to finish with a win. The girls played very well together and as a team. It was the same when we played Western Nebraska. Even though we lost, we put up a very good fight against a team that is ranked No. 4 in the nation right now."
The Trappers downed Northeastern by a 26-24, 17- 25, 18-25, 25-23, 17-15 final count. The loss to Western Nebraska came by a 25-16, 25-17, 28-26 final count.
Northwest College's other four victories came in fairly routine fashion as the team swept McCook, Central Nebraska, Colby and Air Force Prep. Final scores included 25-14, 25-14, 25-23 against McCook, 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 over Central, 25-22, 25-20, 25-9 over Colby and 25-15, 25-19, 25-19 against Air Force Prep.
"We were able to get all of our players a chance to see the court and get playing time against McCook, Colby and Air Force," said Siqueira. "Valerie (Lesu) played libero for us three matches and did a great job."
Tournament statistics had not been compiled as of press time for Northwest College. The Trappers return to action tonight (Tuesday) for a road game at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. NWC also travels to Western Wyoming and Central Wyoming this weekend as the team's marathon month-long road trip continues.
