Former U.S. Olympian named interim volleyball coach

P O W E L L, W y o. - Former Powell High School volleyball standout and 2000 U.S. Olympian Jesseca Cross of Powell has been named Interim Volleyball Coach for the upcoming fall semester at Northwest College.

In announcing the appointment Monday morning, NWC Athletic Director Jim Zeigler explained that a national search to fill the permanent coaching position will be reopened soon. When the search is completed, Zeigler expects a new coach to join the college's staff by January 2008 to begin spring recruiting for the fall '08 season.

"We're excited that Jesseca has agreed to step into this coaching role for the fall semester while we reopen the search," Zeigler said. "She brings great athletic and training experience, including working with young athletes. She'll be a good fit."

"I have always been an athlete and person who sets high standards for myself and those around me," Cross said. "We, as at team, are going for a championship. My team will be trained for nothing less than that."

An All-conference volleyball player while at Powell High School, Cross was selected to participate in the north/south All-Star game. Cross said she was recruited by Division I University of Wyoming to play on a full ride scholarship, but chose the university's basketball and track programs instead.

The last six years, Cross has been a certified personal trainer at the Fayetteville Athletic Club in Fayetteville, Ark. Her expertise includes nutrition programming and athlete counseling. Cross is most well known for her membership on the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team in the shot put event.

Cross is a 2000 honors graduate from UW where she earned a bachelor of science degree in communications and broadcasting, with a minor in marketing.
