With the onset of August, the free days of summer are winding down as student-athletes are starting to stir for the fall seasons.
Giving a bit more training to young volleyball players, before their practice seasons begin, is the Northwest volleyball program as it hosts a series of camps this week at Cabre Gym, drawing participants from all over the state.
“In recent years we’ve had more people here that aren’t from Powell than there are here from Powell,” Trapper head coach Shaun Pohlman said. “We’ve got some from Cody, Basin and Meeteetse, and as far away as Cokeville and Casper.”
The current Lady Trapper roster for the coming schedule is serving as mentors for the camp, passing on their experience and knowledge, all while building up their eagerness to get their competitive slate started.
“The earlier these kids get in the gym and start working, the better off they will be in the long run,” Powell grad and Trapper Kelsey Marchant said. “We love being able to share our knowledge with others to help make the kids the best possible athlete they can be. Obviously it’s just not us that impacts them, but I feel that we can definitely make a difference, and that is very satisfying to know. As far as gearing up for our season, it helps us get talking about the things we need to do and makes us excited about playing ourselves.”
Three separate camps were held, with the “Play Like a Trapper” camp which took place Monday and Tuesday with sessions devoted to hitting, serving and ball control, passing and setting, then setting and hitting.
The Lil’ Trappers mini-camps met Tuesday for a “Learn to Swing” session and are meeting Thursday evening for an All Skills session.
Finally, the “Fear the Red” mini-camps saw two Wednesday sessions, one for hitting and the other for blocking and defense, while Thursday’s two sessions will focus on passing and setting, then setting and hitting.
Once the camps run their course, next week starts up the official practice season for Trapper volleyball as the team looks to make a return visit to the NJCAA National Tournament and at least repeat its appearance in the Final Four.
