POWELL, Wyo. — This summer, kids ages 10-17 can get away from the e-tablets and video games to discover the outdoors through a variety of Outdoor Adventure Camps offered by the Northwest College DELTA program.
The DELTA (Dedicated to Experiential Learning Through Adventure) camps are led by certified instructors and provide all necessary outdoor equipment. Two of the four camps are offered multiple times during the summer.
Youngsters age 10-13 can get acquainted with the outdoor activities available in Northwest Wyoming in Outdoor Adventure Day Camps offered June 2-6, July 7-11 and Aug. 11-15. After getting to know each other on the NWC Challenge Rope Course, campers spend a day each rock climbing, whitewater rafting, hiking and caving. Cost is $175.
Climbing Day Camps are offered July 14-18 and 21-25 for both beginners and experienced climbers age 10-13. Campers spend a few days on real rock and then raft a day on the river to relax. They learn climbing safety, geology of rock climbing areas, proper belay techniques, climbing knots and basic-to-advanced rock climbing movements from a professional climbing instructor. Registration is $240.
The Wilderness Adventure Overnight Camp will trek through the Beartooth Wilderness on two trips— June 9-13 for boys and June 16-20 for girls age 10-13.Campers will hike an average of 4-6 miles a day, learning about low-impact travel, campsite selection, tent construction, map and compass use and leave-no-trace principles. The first day is spent on the high ropes course at the Northwest College Field Station. Cost is $300 and includes all meals.
Finally, seasoned outdoor travelers age 14-17 can participate June 29-July 4 in the Experienced Backpacking Camp. They’ll spend five days in the backcountry covering important skills for navigating different terrains, reading weather patterns, survival techniques and risk analysis for backcountry travel. Terrain will be difficult and demanding with elevation gain and long distance travel. Campers will hike an average of 5-11 miles a day. Cost is $315, including meals.
Before going on the experienced backpacking trip, prospective campers must first pass a tryout day held Saturday, May 31, where they will hike Heart Mountain with a full pack to demonstrate endurance and capability.
