P O W E L L, W y o. - High school teams from Casper and Laramie grabbed the championship team trophies in the 2007 Wolsborn-Drazovich Memorial Math Contest conducted statewide during April.
Almost 2,000 Wyoming high school and junior high students from 76 schools plus home schooled students gathered at 10 locations across the state the day of the contest to take a battery of five 10-question, 20-minute-long mathematics tests. Nearby out-of-state schools are encouraged to compete for rankings in the annual contest, but don't receive awards.
District awards were presented at each of the ten testing locations. The statewide awards are compiled by Northwest College in Powell, which sponsors and organizes the annual contest.
Eleventh and 12th grade teams competed in Class A, and ninth and 10th grade teams in Class B. Seventh and eighth graders contended individually.
Kelly Walsh High School of Casper took first place in the statewide competition in Class A, followed by Sheridan in second and Rock Springs in third.
In Class B, Laramie High School claimed the top score, with Powell and Jackson filling the second and third spots, respectively.
The Class A high individual honors went to Luke Ginsbach (Kelly Walsh) in 4A competition, Drew Hauser (Jackson) in 3A, Matt Guio (Big Piney) in 2A, and Cameron Hoffman (Cokeville) in 1A.
In Class B, the 4A top scorer was Stephen Bagley (Laramie), Stuart Smith (Jackson) in 3A, Kelsey Arson (Riverside High School in Basin) in 2A, and Dallen Fiscus (Cokeville) was the 1A champion.
The top five scorers in the eighth grade class were Timmy Luw (Rock Springs), Michael Scheetz (Gillette), Danny McKearney (Powell), Saxon Bull (Douglas) and Ryan Brogan (Sheridan).
First-through-fifth awards for seventh grade competitors went to Jacob Zeitlow (Sheridan), Megan Olsen (Cheyenne), Skyler Baldwin (Evanston), Austin Byers (Cheyenne) and Ashley Brown (Casper).
