POWELL, Wyo. - Last year's premiere of the "NWC on Broadway" travel class was so popular, it's being offered again in 2010. Reservations are being taken now for 12 openings in the Jan. 11-17 tour of the New York City theater district and other popular city destinations.
For the theater portion of the tour, participants will see five Broadway shows and take a backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall. They'll also make trips to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Ground Zero and several other spots.
Last year's group visited Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Trump Tower, Chinatown, Little Italy, Central Park, Empire State Building and several more sites, according to Fred Ebert, the NWC faculty who's leading the class. He promises plenty of time for shopping and independent sightseeing.
"We tried out the giant piano at F.A.O. Swartz that was featured in the movie 'Big'," Ebert said, "and we sat backstage at 'Equus' with Daniel Ratcliff and Richard Griffiths of the 'Harry Potter' movies."
Participants will be headquartered during their six-night stay at Times Square or at the Hampton Inn in midtown Manhattan (a half mile from the theater district and Madison Square Garden).
"We'll decide together which shows we want to see," Ebert said. "We try to book three in advance and then, if folks want, they can try for student rush tickets on a fifth selection. This netted last year's group $80 tickets for just $10 each."
The approximate cost, based on double occupancy, is $1,500 per person, which covers airfare from Billings, lodging, one evening meal, four theater tickets and Metro passes. Those who are willing to stay in a four-person room can cut that down to $1,200; the three-to-a-room rate is $1,300. Students can expect additional expenses for tuition and fees, meals, checked baggage and personal activities.
Because of limited seating, early sign up is advised. A $250 nonrefundable deposit must be placed by Nov. 1.
