POWELL, Wyoming — The 2016 Northwest Jazz Festival concert featuring the True North vocal ensemble and guest guitarist Larry Koonse begins at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center at Northwest College.
The evening starts with a performance by the Erik Olson Jazz Trio from Billings, Montana, featuring Erik Olson on piano, Parker Brown on bass and Keller Paulson on drums.
Concert goers will also hear performances by the Festival All-Star Jazz Choir and the Festival All-Star Jazz Band, followed by Larry Koonse, a Los Angeles-based jazz guitarist.
Koonse will join True North and its rhythm section onstage as the headlining act. With one CD under its belt, the vocal group walks a musical tightrope of jazz, funk, pop and rhythm and blues. In 2014, the quartet collaborated in the studio with guitarist Peter Sprague on “Ocean In Your Eyes” and appears on Matt Falker’s “Playpen” project. They recently shared the stage with vocalist and saxophonist Don Shelton of The Hi-Lo's and The Singers Unlimited fame. In 2015, they made a splash as headliners at the Jazz Education Network’s convention in San Diego.
Tickets cost $25 and will be sold at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased by calling 307-254-6425 or stopping by Room 16 of the Nelson Performing Arts Center.
The Northwest Jazz Festival is supported in part by a grant from the Wyoming Arts Council through funding from the Wyoming State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.
