P O W E L L, W y o. - During April the Northwest College Center for Training and Development in Powell will offer workforce trainings in Excel, basic bookkeeping and building better meetings.

Rhonda Shipp leads Building Better Meetings from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, April 2. She'll talk about the lesser known "standing" or "special rules" that can be used instead of the formal and more familiar Robert's Rules of Order, which was first published in 1876 for large assemblies.

"The formality of Robert's Rules may not work well for smaller organizations or boards," Shipp said. "Robert recognized this and offered an alternative called standing or special rules. Smaller groups tend to be informal, relaxed and flexible, preferring democratic processes that lean towards win-win rather than win/lose voting." Shipp said she'll talk about how to use the simpler, more flexible tools to enhance meeting productivity that honor the tenets of democracy while maintaining a sense of order. Shipp is the area community development educator for the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service.

Cost is $10 per person and includes lunch.

An advanced Excel class is offered from 5:30-9 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, April 8 and 10, for both business owners and employees who want to boost their electronic spreadsheet skills.

Bill Boudreaux will provide a basic overview and then move on to analyzing data using formulas, managing workbook data, using tables, analyzing table data and much more. Boudreaux adjusts the topics to meet both the general and specific needs of students in the class. His personal attention, combined with several hands-on exercises to reinforce each topic, help ensure that students walk away with a thorough understanding of each facet of the software they cover in class.

Cost is $79 and includes a comprehensive manual. This class is approved for teacher recertification. It carries .5 credit from the Professional Teaching Standards Board.

An introductory level training in Basic Bookkeeping starts Tuesday, April 15, for those individuals who find themselves wearing the bookkeeper's hat at their job, as well as for those who just want to feel a little more secure in their established bookkeeping duties.

Basic Bookkeeping meets four times from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 15-24, in the Northwest College Center for Training and Development on NWC's West Campus.

Taught by Lynne Whitmore, a certified public accountant, the training covers the general journal, general ledger, bank account reconciliation, cash receipts journal, cash disbursements journal, payroll and payroll reports. Whitmore asks participants to bring a one-month personal check register with them to the first class.

Cost is $85 per person. This class is co-sponsored by the Wyoming Small Business Development Center. The WSBDC exists to help start-up and existing small businesses by providing education, workshops, resources and free, confidential business counseling. It is a partnership program funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Wyoming Business Council, and the University of Wyoming. Reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities will be made, if requested at least two weeks in advance. Please e-mail Bruce Morse or call (307) 754-2139 or toll-free (800) 383-0371.
