POWELL, Wyo. - Incoming first-year Northwest College students can beef up their mathematics skills free of charge next month at the college.
Offered by the NWC Mathematics Department, the Aug. 11-22 Summer Bridge Program is aimed at improving students’ math placement score through intensive review of arithmetic and algebraic operations.
“By improving incoming placement scores during this program, students have the potential to avoid a full semester of developmental math coursework,” NWC Assistant Professor of Mathematics Don Anderson said. “In doing so, students will begin their college career in a math course which will satisfy requirements for many programs at NWC and at transfer institutions sooner.”
The two-week program is on NWC’s campus in Powell and includes a residential component.
All expenses, including instruction, activities, housing and meals, are covered by funding through a Wyoming Access Challenge Grant and the Northwest College Foundation. In addition, those who successfully complete the program earn a $100 stipend to assist with fall semester expenses.
Limited to 25 students, selected participants must meet a minimum placement score and be prepared to enroll in a college-level mathematics course during the fall semester.
Students will also be introduced to a variety of campus services and work with NWC faculty and staff to improve study skills and time management as well as engage in general strategies for college success, Anderson explained.
The program also offers students an opportunity to learn more about the area through field trips to Yellowstone National Park, the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and the Buffalo Bill Reservoir and Dam. A float trip on the Shoshone River is included.
