POWELL, Wyoming — Community members are invited to participate in a Campus Awareness Walk at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, hosted by the Sources of Strength Suicide Prevention Team at Northwest College.
Walkers are asked to meet outside Colter Hall on Sixth Street. Participants can sign up beginning at 3 p.m. and expect to walk around campus, less than one mile total.
A selection of colored beads will be available to let walkers identify their reason for walking.
In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 13.7 minutes, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students and the third for youth ages 15-24.
This public health issue does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. The AFSP says each year suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined
The NWC Sources of Strength Suicide Prevention Team organized the April 7 Campus Awareness Walk to help change the conversation about mental health and put a stop to this tragic loss of life. They walk to honor loved ones and to save lives.
In case of bad weather the walk will be held Tuesday, April 28, at 4.
