POWELL, Wyo. - Rocky Mountain ag producers have a new kind of spring roundup to think about in the coming year. Instead of gathering livestock, they can gather with the best agricultural minds in the region at Spring Roundup 2011, Thursday and Friday, Jan. 27 and 28, at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo.
The two-day affair offers a slate of well known speakers, high-interest information sessions and an international entertainer who performed for U.S. President Ronald Reagan. The focus is helping ag producers hone their business skills to succeed in a changing world.
Cost to attend the two-day roundup is $89 per person, which includes all meals and sessions, except for the Thursday night entertainment. The first 200 people to sign up will receive free registration.
Wayne Fahsholtz, CEO of the Padlock Ranch out of Dayton, Wyo., will open the roundup with a talk about the future of the beef industry. The other keynote speaker is Marcie Scott, chief financial officer of S Ranch Ltd., with holdings in Montana and Texas. She’ll talk about moving from a family ranch to a ranching business model.
The Thursday lunch speaker is J.D. Radokovich, general manager of the Hoodoo Ranch, with holdings in New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Texas. He’ll present a talk titled “Working on the business, not in the business.” He’ll be accompanied by graduate students from the King Ranch Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville who will share their research on the value of working on strategic planning in agriculture.
The breakout sessions feature information about employee retention, generational planning, the futures market, ag economics, environmental and economic risks, locally grown food co-ops, USDA programs for new farmers and ranchers, starting a new ag business, plus others.
Entertainment is provided by Red Steagall, best known for his Texas swing dance music and songs “Here We Go Again,” “Party Dolls and Wine,” “Freckles Brown” and “Lone Star Beer and Bob Wills Music.”
The Northwest College Foundation will host a social hour prior to Steagall’s concert for networking and a chance to meet with the presenters.
Tickets to the Red Steagall Show are $25 or two for $40.
