“Souvenirs,” an exhibit by Northwest College’s Anne Toner, is featured in the Northwest Gallery on campus through Sept. 29. An artist’s reception is planned Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in the gallery located in the Cabre Building.
Toner notes that her exhibit captures the rich cultures of her most recent destinations.
“In the last 15 months while on sabbatical from the NWC Art Department, I’ve had a chance to travel—a lot,” she said. “I’ve traveled to New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York City, Washington D.C., Montreal, Portugal, Spain, Mexico, Morocco, Greece, Crete, Sicily and Italy.”
In 2000 and 2001, Toner earned two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Wyoming. Soon afterward, in 2005, she earned her master’s from the University of Idaho.
Currently, she is an assistant professor of art and art department coordinator at Northwest College. Toner offers a wide range of expertise and teaches courses in gender studies, art history, as well as color theory and design.
“Along the way, I’ve sketched, painted, snapped photos, and thought about the places I’ve been and the place I’m in,” Toner explains. “This [exhibit] is an echo of some of the bits and pieces I’ve experienced and absorbed.”
While she cherishes these new regions, cultures and memorable experiences, she says she is glad to be home and has “vowed to never, ever get on another airplane.”
The Northwest Gallery is open Mon-Fri, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Thursday, 7-9 p.m. Admission is free.
