P O W E L L, W y o. - Worland area residents who want to learn or update their computer skills can choose from six noncredit software trainings during the month of November, starting Wednesday, Nov. 1, with QuickBooks for Small Businesses.

The QuickBooks class meets from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays, Nov. 1-15, and is geared to address the particular needs of small businesses in the Big Horn Basin. "QuickBooks for Small Businesses" is sponsored through a partnership between the Northwest College Center for Training and Development (formerly called Workforce Development), Wyoming Small Business Development Center, U.S. Small Business Administration and the Wyoming Business Council.

Instructor Joe Asay will first go over the fundamentals of the software program, including customer and vendor transactions, banking and creating a company file. "Small businesses will learn about an extremely efficient record keeping system," Asay said. "This software program allows small business owners to gain control of the financial aspects of their business." He said the class provides lots of hands-on training so students are comfortable with the software and concepts before they leave. Cost is $79 per person.

Four introductory courses - Computer Fundamentals, Basic Word, Basic Excel and the Internet Basics - are designed for beginners and for those who want to prepare for IC3 Certification to upgrade their jobs or to enter the job market. Each course meets from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Basic Word and Basic Excel meet twice; the others meet only once.

Training in Computer Fundamentals, offered on Thursday, Nov. 2, guides participants through a series of exercises to become familiar with basic computer terminology, plus hardware and software that is essential to computer users in today's world of technology. Students learn to utilize the settings and elements of the operating system, how to organize their files and folders, access online help and many other basic computer functions.

Basic Microsoft Word training, offered Nov. 7 and 9, introduces the tools needed to create, edit, print and save a Word document. Starting with the basics, students will first learn to use toolbars, fonts, margins, tabs, bullets, cut, copy and paste commands. They'll advance to inserting graphics and symbols, tables, using a template and creating headers and footers.

Students in the Nov. 14 and 16 Basic Excel class start by exploring and navigating Excel and using the toolbars. In addition to learning how to create a worksheet and enter formulas into cells, they'll also add charts to a worksheet and use Excel's many formatting features. Saving and printing documents are covered, as well.

Internet Basics meets from 6:30-8:30 Tuesday evening, Nov. 21, and covers e-mailing, Web-browsing, searching, securing sensitive data and many other features needed to move around on the World Wide Web.

The one-night Computer Fundamentals and Internet Basics classes cost $20 each. Word and Excel trainings are $30 each. Registering for the entire package of four classes is $90, saving $10 off the cost of taking them all individually.

A Fast Track PowerPoint training is given in an all-day format from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17. Taught by Amy Lamm, the class is formatted so each participant can sit at a computer to learn the fundamentals of PowerPoint design. Participants in this training receive a hands-on course of study in building presentations, formatting slides, using the draw tools and working with graphics. The cost is $60 per person, which includes the manual.
