POWELL, Wyo. - The enrollment deadline for a nine-day Wilderness First Responder (WFR) class is Monday, March 10. The WFR course will be held Saturday-Sunday, April 12-20, at the Northwest College Mickelson Field Station near Sunlight.
Students in this fast-paced class learn to make critical medical and evacuation decisions in remote locations. They should be prepared for wet, muddy, cold or possibly even hot environments because they’ll spend half their time outside of the classroom in realistic scenarios, including a full-scale night mock rescue.
The nationally recognized NOLS Wilderness Medicine Institute curriculum encompasses a wide range of topics including long-term patient care, wound management, straightening angulated fractures, reducing dislocations, litter packaging and administering medications.
The intensive 80-hour curriculum is delivered by educators who have practiced medicine in both wilderness and urban environments. They work to ensure students develop the knowledge and confidence to manage patients in the backcountry for multiple days. Adult and child CPR and airway management certification is included.
No previous first-aid training is required, but students must be at least 16 years of age.
This WMI course can be taken for four college credits, for 70 hours of EMT Continuing Education Hours, or as a noncredit class.
The cost is $775 for Northwest College students and $995 for nonstudents. This includes all textbooks, equipment, certifications, lodging and meals.
