P O W E L L, W y o. - Eight Big Horn Basin musicians won awards and scholarships at the 32nd Showalter Memorial Music Festival held Saturday at Northwest College.
Each individual recognized for outstanding musical abilities received a plaque and a $175 scholarship to the 2008 Yellowstone Summer Music Camp. They were also asked to perform in the festival's closing concert.
Once again, Cody fielded the most winners and one of them even took home two awards. Bryan Bear was recognized for both a clarinet solo and a piano solo. Other Cody winners were Victoria Gwynn and Cara Schultz for their vocal solos, and the trumpet duet of Michelle Lam and Jesse Gordon.
Austin Brost of Rocky Mountain Middle School got the winning nod for his baritone solo, and the vocal duo of Brittany Anderson and Elizabeth Craft of Worland also performed well enough to claim a plaque and scholarship.
Festival clinicians were Marianne Bibbey, Tom Bibbey, Jan Kliewer, John Miller, Craig Olson, Tim Schoessler and Vicki Streeter.
The festival, named after Victor Showalter, a former music professor at Northwest College, is directed by Neil Hansen, an NWC associate professor of music. Between 400-500 students from Wyoming and Montana participated in this year's event.
