P O W E L L, W y o. - Big Horn Basin residents are invited to visit the tastes and traditions of other countries without leaving the basin on Saturday, April 14, at the Northwest College Multicultural Showcase.
Sponsored by the college's 2007 Multicultural Events Series, the showcase runs from 1-4 p.m. in the Trapper Rendezvous Lounge of the DeWitt Student Center.
It features displays, demonstrations, musical performances, poetry readings, photography and art exhibits, plus food from around the world. Visitors can view cultural examples from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Australia. A silent auction of international items is also planned
In a virtual feast for the senses, participants can watch ballroom dancing, listen to piano music, hear songs from China and Vietnam, witness a demonstration of martial arts from Japan, see a display of the race horse culture of Mongolia, and hear a bilingual presentation of Japanese haiku. They can also participate in demonstrations of origami and calligraphy, and, of course, sample food from Indonesia, Germany, Australia, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, France, Senegal, and Mexico. Recipes of the food served will be available for purchase, and, new this year, leftovers will be sold at the end of the showcase.
Most of the work for the showcase is being done by members of NWC's International, Spanish, French, and Native Ways clubs according to Rob Stothart, Northwest's International Club adviser.
"Our international students love to share their culture with the wider college community," Stothart said. "They are also excited about the opportunity to work with the other groups such as Native Ways and the French and Spanish Clubs."
Admission to the International Showcase is free. Food tickets will sell for $.50 per serving; with some of the "fancier" items costing two tickets.
