P O W E L L, W y o. - When it comes to college, it's never too early to start planning. That's why Northwest College moved up its Scholarship Day this year from the usual February date to Monday, Dec. 4. NWC will award roughly $2 million in scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year.

"We wanted students to begin thinking about college earlier," Beverly Bell, director of financial aid and scholarships at NWC, said. "Setting Scholarship Day earlier was one way to get them to start thinking, preparing and applying for scholarships and admissions earlier."

Even though the priority postmark deadline for Scholarship Day consideration was Nov. 13, Bell said the college is accepting late applications to encourage as many interested students as possible to start thinking earlier about college.

NWC's 2006 Scholarship Day represents the 27th time Northwest has offered this unique opportunity for high school seniors and their parents, as well as transfer students, to visit campus and talk directly with faculty and other college personnel during the same day that students interview for scholarships.

Students attending can choose from 59 academic scholarship opportunities, four language and English scholarships, plus 12 areas of activity and athletic scholarships, and merit scholarships for out-of-state students. These are in addition to about 150 private scholarships awarded by NWC, bringing the total scholarship dollars to more than $2 million available to students who enroll at Northwest College in 2007-08. Northwest also offers federal loans, grants and work-study options for financing secondary education.

In addition to scholarship activities, students, parents and high school counselors can also tour campus and attend a financial aid workshop, ask questions of current NWC students sitting on a student issues panel and clarify expectations with support personnel serving on a student services panel. Lunch is open to everyone and provided free of charge to students.

Because NWC's residence halls are completely filled this year, the college can't honor its usual practice of providing free housing to students who travel to Scholarship Day from beyond a 90-mile radius of the college.
