P O W E L L, W y o. - Trumpeters of all shapes and sizes will be blowing their horns in unison at a 7:30 p.m. concert Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Northwest College in Powell.
The public concert is the culminating event of the day-long Festival of Trumpets. The evening's repertoire spans a diversity ranging from Handel's "Hallelujah" to the traditional "Shenandoah."
The program begins with a recital by James Stokes, this year's featured artist. Stokes performs regularly with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, the CAPA Broadway Show Series and many other ensembles in the Central Ohio region and across the United States.
He is an artist/performer/adjudicator for the National Trumpet Competition and current chair of the Orchestral Competition for the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Conference. In addition, Stokes is a member of the Capital Brass Quintet and the founding member of the Cathedral Brass Ensemble. He's a clinician for the Vincent Bach Corporation and trumpet professor at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.
Also featured in the solo spotlight is NWC student Andy Mrozinsky, a piccolo player from Cody.
Earlier in the day, trumpet players and others are invited to a clinic given by Stokes on "The Four P's of Trumpet Playing." Don McComas, a retired trumpeter with the Philadelphia Orchestra, will present a clinic on "The Orchestra Trumpet Player."
The all-trumpet concert concludes a day of clinics, competitions, demonstrations, displays and more. Admission is free for the entire festival, including the evening concert.
