POWELL, Wyo. - Northwest College’s NWC on Broadway class filled so quickly last year, the college is adding more seats to the January 2011 field studies tour.
The seven-day class is open to 20 people who want to explore New York City’s theater scene as well as take in a full complement of tourist opportunities from Jan. 10-16.
The group will attend a minimum of five Broadway and off-Broadway shows, plus tour a variety of theater venues. A dinner at the famed Ellen’s Stardust Diner on Times Square is also on the itinerary.
Class members will meet to decide which shows and events they’ll attend. Previous classes have visited the Empire State Building, Lincoln Center, Statue of Liberty, Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, plus shopped on Fifth Avenue, walked through Little Italy and China Town, and much more.
The itinerary and experiences are different each year, but certain themes are constant. One student who attended the Broadway production of “Equus” on the 2009 trip said, “The exciting thing was that we got onstage seating. It was a bird’s eye view. Very interesting.”
Another student was touched more by the sites than the theater, saying about the Statue of Liberty: “I was so proud and honored to get to see her. I appreciate all she represents and the freedom that our soldiers fight for so diligently.”
Another found a special memory when he/she learned from a tour guide at Liberty Island that a trip to the second floor of a Burger King near ground zero would offer a view past the fences surrounding the historic site.
The class is headquartered out of The Harold Square Hotel (the original LIFE Magazine building), a short walking distance from Time Square. Fred Ebert, an NWC instructor in speech communications and forensics, is the instructor and tour organizer.
The approximate cost per person, based on double occupancy, is $1,600, which covers airfare from Billings, Mont., lodging, one evening meal, five theater tickets, admission to more than 50 venues/events, Metro passes, transfers and transportation to and from Billings. Beyond this, students are responsible for tuition and fees (for THEA 2490), meals, checked baggage and personal activities.
Registration and a $250 deposit are due by Oct.10.
