POWELL, Wyoming — A monthly tradition at Northwest College resumed this year with a new name — the Stothart First Friday Readings are held from noon-1 p.m. the first Friday of each month in the Hinckley Library Amphitheatre. The next reading is Friday, Oct. 3.
The First Friday Readings were renamed to honor Rob Stothart, a former associate professor of English who helped launch the NWC Writers Series and contributed regularly to the Friday readings. Stothart retired last spring.
Each month, an open mic is set up for college and community participants to read their original writing or offer their interpretation of a favorite author.
Over the years, poetry, essays, excerpts from favorite pieces of literature and more have been shared by readers from age 8 to 80. The list of participants includes nationally published authors, school children, community members, aspiring poets, NWC students, staff and faculty and many more.
First Friday readers can add their names to a sign-up sheet immediately before the reading starts or just wait and take the podium after the scheduled readers are finished.
Those who enjoy listening more than sharing are equally welcome. Food is allowed in the library amphitheatre for those who want to make their lunch a literary one.
