P O W E L L, W y o. - Over 40 trumpeters will sound out an evening of trumpet tunes Saturday, Feb. 3, at a 7:30 p.m. concert in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium at Northwest College in Powell.
The free concert is the culminating event of the day-long Festival of Trumpets. The evening's repertoire spans a diversity that ranges from numbers by Handel and Verdi, to a Welch tune and a South African folk song.
The program begins with recitals by guest artist Jay Coble, Neil Hansen and the 2006-07 Northwest College Wind Band's trumpet section, plus the winner of the festival's high school solo competition.
Coble, the festival's featured artist has performed with the likes of Natalie Cole, Mel Torme and Nancy Wilson, and has toured internationally with Buddy Rich and Tom Jones. He's has also been featured on commercials for Infinity Cars, Alaska Air, Shell Oil and Pepsi, to name a few.
In addition to his international teaching experiences and performances with symphony orchestras from California to Florida, Coble has had his performances recorded for television shows such as the "Tracy Ullman Show" and "The Simpsons."
Hansen, director of bands at NWC, is a long-time trumpet instructor. He's one of the primary forces behind the yearly Northwest Jazz Festival, which has brought artists like Woody Herman, Maynard Ferguson, Arturo Sandoval and Clark Terry to Powell. Hansen is also a founding member of the Yellowstone Jazz Festival, which has expanded to a year-long series of concerts in Park County.
The NWC trumpet section features the musical stylings of William Crompton of Evanston, Max Harrington of Rock Springs, Antonio Martinez of Worland and Marcus Stowe of Pinedale.
Earlier in the day, trumpet players and others are invited to a conversation with Coble and with Don McComas, a retired trumpeter with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Click here for more information about the 2007 Festival of Trumpets.
