POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Wind Band and Powell High School Band blend their talents in a musical feast at the annual Wind Band spring concert Tuesday, April 16, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.
The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Powell High School Band Director John Fabela. The PHS Band will perform “First Suite in E flat: March,” “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” and “Toccata For Band.”
The NWC Wind Band takes the stage under the baton of NWC Director of Bands Neil Hansen, who will retire this year after a long career as a music educator. “I’ll be doing some favorites on this last concert with the college Wind Band,” he said.
The play list includes a collection of favorite melodies from Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man.” Forty years ago, Hansen did his student teaching in Mason City, Iowa, Wilson’s boyhood home and the inspiration for the musical set in the fictional River City.
Other selections include “Prelude, Siciliano and Rondo;” “As Summer Was Just Beginning,” a soulful piece dedicated to the late teen idol actor James Dean; “Clowns” and “Arabesque,” written with a Middle Eastern flavor.
The Powell High School Band joins the Wind Band to close the concert with “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” by John Philip Sousa.
Admission to the concert is free.
