POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Vocal Jazz II and Jazz Band II groups will color the sounds of the genre in a 7:30 p.m. concert Monday, Nov. 19, in the Nelson Performing Arts Center Auditorium.
Jazz originated in New Orleans around 1900 and has developed through increasingly complex styles for over a century. Like reflections from a prism, the possibilities of jazz move in many directions and styles, from smooth and mellow to the intricate rhythms and melodies of Dixieland, big band swing, bebop, modern jazz, funk and more.
The two music ensembles, under the direction of Craig Olson, will explore some of the possibilities. Vocal Jazz II will showcase a collection of tunes including “Blue Monk” and “Mr. Jazz Man,” and feature the rhythm section on a surprise number.
Both groups share the stage to perform “It’s All Right With Me,” a well-known Cole Porter tune.
Jazz Band II wraps up the evening with “One Size Fits All,” “Work Song,” “The Jazz Police,” “I Remember Clifford” and “Wind Machine.”
Admission to this evening of jazz is free and open to the public.
