P O W E L L, W y o. - Last year's co-editor of the Northwest Trail, AAron Ontiveroz, won the sports story of the year competition held by the Associated Collegiate Press.
Ontiveroz's story about the retirement of NWC basketball coach Ken Rochlitz won against the other five finalists in the category from Harvard University, Boston College, Truman State University, the University of Nevada and Abilene Christian University. Ontiveroz's story can be read online.
"This is the first time the Trail has won an individual writing award at the national level," said adviser Dennis Davis, assistant professor of journalism/mass communication at Northwest College. "It demonstrates the talent AAron exhibited in his tenure on the Trail staff."
Ontiveroz currently attends the University of Wyoming in Laramie and works part-time for the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle in Cheyenne.
The award was announced Saturday, Oct. 25, during the ACP national convention in St. Louis, Mo.
The Trail was a finalist for the national Pacemaker for the third straight year. Ontiveroz co-edited the paper in the 2005-2006 academic year with Kara Bacon, who is now a student at the University of Iowa.
The eight students from this year's Trail staff at the convention saw St. Louis residents celebrate the World Series win by the Cardinals on Friday, Oct. 24.
