POWELL, Wyo. - In a downturned economy and grim forecasts, the Northwest College Student Senate is looking at the long term and asking for an increase in fees assessed to students in order to maintain or enhance current levels of support for student activities and initiatives.

NWC Student Senate officers attended the college's board of trustees meeting Monday night to seek approval for an increase in student fees if a majority of students approve the initiative in a vote taken today on campus in Powell and at the Cody Center.

Student Senate Vice President Tiffany Kennedy explained to board members why the senate feels it needs to increase fees and what the money is used for. The Senate is asking NWC students to vote on three options today: one leaves the fee structure as it is currently and the other two propose different fee increases.

One of the biggest items supported by students fees at NWC is its health services center. Vice President for Student Affairs Dana Young explained why the college's student health services are considered unique to Northwest and why it's so important to students.

If an increase isn't approved, the Student Senate will be forced to cut support to some areas on campus.
