POWELL, Wyo. - China is the topic of a Monday, Oct. 24, forum presented by the Northwest College International Studies Scholars Lecture Series.
The panel discussion begins at 4 p.m. in Room 70 of the Fagerberg Building on campus. It’s titled “Understanding the China-U.S. Challenge: Globalization, Economic Development and a Future of Shared Dependence.”
Four panelists from Shanghai University in China and the University of Wyoming (UW) will talk about China’s future economic and political prospects, Chinese modernity, culture change, social trends, China’s world view and relationships with its neighbors.
From Shanghai University, the panelists are Zhenjiang Ning, a professor of history, and Qiao Jin, lecturer and researcher at the Institute of Social Science Survey of Shanghai.
The UW representatives to the panel are Thomas Seitz of the UW International Studies Program and Jean Garrison, director of international studies.
Their discussion will be aimed at creating an understanding of the opportunities and challenges China presents for the United States and the rest of the world, both now and in the future. With many already labeling the 21st century as China’s century, China’s political, economic and social trends are expected to have ripple effects around the globe.
This forum is part of the state-wide International Studies Scholar Lecture Series, now in its third year. It is funded by a U.S. Department of Education grant to the UW International Studies Program in partnership with all seven Wyoming community colleges.
Admission is free.
The lecture series is sponsored by the Northwest College International Studies Program, UW International Studies Program, Wyoming Humanities Council and UW Office of Academic Affairs.
