POWELL, Wyoming — In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the Native Ways student organization at Northwest College will host its annual Buffalo Feast at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in the Yellowstone Building Conference Room.
This year’s entertainment is provided by the Crow Sound Dogs drum group and the Greasy Grass Dance Troop. Both are original members of Black Whistle, a well-known drum group based out of Lodge Grass, Montana.
The musicians and dancers are all members of the Crow Nation with deep-rooted traditions in the Apsáalooke ways. Each adult, teen and child has been dancing since they were born or brought into the circle.
Every dance they perform has its own unique purpose and story that has been handed down through the years. The showcase will include intertribal songs, children’s, men’s and women’s exhibitions, Crow Hop, Dunk ‘n’ Dive, Round Dance and Push Dance.
Drummers are: Johnny Tim Yellowtail, Jeff McDonald and Sonny Covers-up. Male dancers are Jack Real Bird, Dwayne Blacksmith and Hadley Bearclaw. Female dancers are Amber White, Destiny Bearclaw, America Hugs, Dazzlyn Hugs, Maryon Hugs and Angelina McDonald.
Their musical interpretations capture and celebrate stories about Native American culture whether performed at pow wows, ceremonies, graduations, birthday parties or other events.
The dance program follows the traditional feast featuring buffalo roast and foods indigenous to the Americas, and has been part of NWC’s culture for the past 19 years.
Tickets cost $19 for adults, $12 for children 12 and under, and $9 for NWC students. Advance reservations are required by Monday, Nov. 9.
