POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Forensics Team brought home gold, silver and bronze from the Phi Rho Pi Nationals, wrapping up its 2011-12 year. The April 9-14 national tournament was hosted in Schaumberg, Ill., by Moraine Valley College.
The NWC squad collected 10 individual awards on its way to silver in debate sweepstakes.
Justin Rogers of Buffalo took fourth place in overall individual sweepstakes by scoring gold in parliamentary debate and impromptu, silver in Lincoln-Douglas debate, and bronze in extemporaneous.
Saige Smith of Powell shared the gold in parliamentary debate with Rogers and added a bronze in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
Jessica Ayres of Newcastle added another bronze in extemporaneous.
NWC students weren’t the only ones recognized at the tournament. Duane Fish and Virginia Fish, current and former forensics director, respectively, were awarded the Bell-Scroggins Team Debate Fellowship Award for their years of service to team debate at Phi Rho Pi Nationals and across the Rocky Mountain region. This is the first time coaches, instead of students, were honored with this award.
Coached by Fish, Bob Becker, Fred Ebert and Jeannie Hunt, the NWC Forensics Team is looking at a rebuilding season next year with only two students returning.
