POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Forensics Squad isn’t eligible for team awards at its own Trapper Rendezvous Forensics Tournament Nov. 9-10 on campus. That’s okay since there’s no room left on the trophy shelves. What was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the young team turned into a fall semester trophy haul.
The season began with a bang Sept. 21-23 at the 50th United States Air Force Academy Forensics Classic/University of Utah Swing Tournament in Colorado Springs. In addition to 17 individual awards, the payload included a first place in debate sweepstakes, second in community college sweepstakes and third overall.
NWC ramped up the trophy haul at Casper College’s Pioneer Trails Tournament on Oct. 4-6, finishing first place overall. All 10 NWC students who traveled to Casper won at least one individual award. First-place finishers included Lincoln-Douglas debater Quintin Brown of Billings, Mont., and the duet team of Sara Bridgeman, Cody, and Matt Dillon, Greybull.
The team traveled back to Colorado Springs Oct. 26-28 for its last away tournament of the semester. At Colorado College’s Al Johnson Invitational, NWC placed second in debate sweepstakes, second among community colleges and fourth overall. Claire Garman of Townsend, Mont., earned the highest individual placing with a first place speaker award in inexperienced parliamentary debate.
The NWC squad starts off the new year Jan. 4 by hosting a high school speech meet on campus. They’ll travel to tournaments in Cheyenne and Reno in February.
