P O W E L L, W y o. - It doesn't get much better than this. That's what Northwest College forensics coaches and students are saying about their 2007-08 season.
The NWC forensics team recently completed its second consecutive perfect season, winning the community college sweepstakes category at every tournament they attended and even claiming overall sweepstakes at a few tournaments, beating out all two- and four-years schools alike.
The icing on that double layer cake is a best-ever finish at the March 27-30 National Parliamentary Debate Association Tournament at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. Awards were given both for best performance at the tournament itself and for the cumulative season.
The NWC debaters won the national second place award for the cumulative season among community colleges. They finished ninth overall in the total season rankings, championing all but seven four-year colleges and one other community college in the entire nation.
They added to that haul the highest national tournament finish in the school's history by taking fourth place among community colleges. A top-10 finish like this is noteworthy in itself but is made even more impressive with the understanding that NWC sent only two two-person teams to the national tournament. Those two teams competed against schools with as many as eight teams.
The schools that collided at the national tournament weren't no-name contenders. They included the likes of Harvard, Purdue, Texas Tech, and more locally, the University of Wyoming and Carroll College.
Northwest fielded only four individuals to the National Parliamentary Debate Tournament but will be sending 10 of its finest to the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament for individual events April 14-19 in St. Charles, Ill.
