POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Forensics Team made history at the United States Air Force Academy’s 48th annual forensics tournament when it claimed overall sweepstakes. NWC is the first community college team ever to win the prestigious tournament.
Of the 18 colleges and universities that competed Feb. 11-13 in Colorado Springs, Colo., Northwest placed first overall, first among community colleges, first in debate and second in individual events.
The overall sweepstakes award is a large traveling trophy showing the names of all the institutions that have claimed it. Northwest College will now be listed among the likes of the University of Southern California, Baylor University in Texas, Loyola University in Chicago, the University of Alabama and many more.
The USAF awards very specialized trophies—the large falcons are unique on the forensics circuit and coveted by colleges across the country. NWC has a flock of them from the 2011 tournament to add to its collection.
In addition to team accolades, NWC students also claimed more than their share of individual awards. The leader was Laci Kennedy of Townsend, Mont., who placed first in the individual competitor sweepstakes.
The USAF win came on the heels of another NWC win at the Fiesta Flatland Swing Jan. 28-30 in Cheyenne. The NWC team claimed first in the swing tournament, earning the most combined points from both the Hastings College and Laramie County Community College competitions that were held together as a swing tournament.
NWC is on the road again Feb. 18-20 to attend the Western States Forensic Tournament hosted in Stockton, Calif., by the University of the Pacific.
