POWELL, Wyo. - The Northwest College Forensics Team closed its regular season with a first place finish in Albuquerque, N.M., followed by a second in Spokane, Wash.
At the Western States Forensics Tournament Feb. 17-19 in Albuquerque, Northwest claimed the championship trophy for two-year schools and second place overall behind San Jose State University.
In the debate category, NWC students placed first and second in Lincoln-Douglas debate, and third in open parliamentary and novice parliamentary. In debate speaker awards, they grabbed first, second and fifth in Lincoln-Douglas; fourth, sixth and 10th in novice parliamentary; and third, seventh and 10th in open parliamentary.
The squad also picked up 25 awards in individual events.
Saige Smith of Powell dominated the NWC trophy haul, bringing home the first place Lincoln-Douglas debate and speaker award, seventh place open parliamentary debate speaker, plus thirds in duet and poetry.
Other first place winners were Shelby Moore of Powell (impromptu) and Louisa Wilkinson of Billings, Mont., (persuasive and junior persuasive).
In the Voices on the River Tournament March 2-4 at Spokane Falls Community College, NWC placed fourth overall and second among community colleges.
Krista Stone of Annapolis, Md., and Louisa Wilkinsen of Billings, Mont., were NWC’s high scorers with second place finishes in novice after-dinner speaking and persuasion, respectively.
The competition will crank up a notch when the NWC debaters participate in two national tournaments beginning March 16.
Before heading to the April 9 Phi Rho Pi National Tournament, team members will perform their best individual events for the Powell community. The date of the public presentation will be announced later.
